One of the great Christian writers, A.W. Tozer, has a book called The Pursuit of God. I have had this book and read it a few times over the years. I recently started reading it again. It is one of those books that both convicts and compels you. Convicting because it brings to light the deficient areas of my life. Compelling because Tozer, in addition to being an author, was a pastor. He was gifted in bringing the Word in ways that motivate.
At the end of the first chapter entitled “Following Hard After God”, Tozer writes a prayer. The words and conviction that this prayer are simply amazing. I thought I would share the words that got me right down to the bone.
“O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirstyI am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, that so I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, ‘Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.’ Then give me grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long. In Jesus’ name. Amen.” for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. (emphasis mine)
